KOLKATA - A teacher of an English medium school here was arrested Tuesday on charges of demanding a laptop from a student to promote him to a higher class, police said.
The student was not promoted from Class 4 to Class 5 of the La Martiniere for Boys School here as his parents failed to meet the teacher’s demand, according to the complaint filed by the student’s father Parthasarathi Mukherjee with the police.
The teacher was arrested after Calcutta High Court turned down his appeal for anticipatory bail. He has been remanded to police custody till May 28.
Mukherjee filed the complaint with the Shakespeare Sarani police station last month saying the teacher had threatened not to promote his son if he was not given a laptop.
“The father complained that as he did not meet his demand, the teacher ensured the student was detained in the same class,” said an officer in the police station.
