CHANDIGARH - Having conned a leading car dealer in Chandigarh by dramatically driving away in a Honda City car during a test drive January this year, a car thief has finally been found by the Chandigarh police - Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

The Chandigarh cops have secured the remand of Varun Kaul, alias Gaurav Sethi, a resident of Gurgaon’s Sector 22, for having conned Honda cars dealer, Lally Automobiles, here January this year.

The car dealer complained to the police that a person named Gaurav Sethi came to their car showroom January 10 this year and agreed to buy a Honda City car. He even deposited a demand draft of Rs.892,375 from the Bank of India, Faridabad, towards the car’s price.

Insisting on a test drive so that his wife could approve of the car, Sethi drove with the car dealer’s sales consultant to Kharar town, 20 km from here. There, he asked the consultant to move to the rear seat to enable his wife, Anu Sethi, to sit next to the driver’s seat.

While his wife got in to the front seat, Sethi locked the central locking of the car and sped away, leaving the consultant stranded on the road.

When the car dealer presented the demand draft to his bank, it was found to be a forged one.

“During the course of investigation, it was found that Varun Kaul of Sector 22, Gurgaon, was arrested by Delhi Police recently while he was trying to drive away a Tata Safari SUV in the same dramatic manner,” a Chandigarh police official said here Tuesday.

The car-thief was finally found by the Chandigarh police lodged at the Tihar Jail in Delhi.

Investigating police official Naveen Sharma said that Varun Kaul used to impersonate as Gaurav Sethi to take away new and expensive cars.

Kaul was remanded to three days in police custody by a local court here.
