NEW DELHI - An aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court for abducting a businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs.1.5 crore.

A division bench of Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Suresh Kait expressed its anguish that the use of a rented government accommodation to keep the victim in confinement was a reflection of corruption.

Accused K.K. Saini operated from a government quarter which was allotted to a Supreme Court official.

Businessman Sikander Lal Pahwa was abducted March 2, 1994, from Greater Kailash-II in south Delhi and kept in the government quarter in R.K.Puram, from where the accused made ransom calls through a telephone which was in the name of another person.

The accused had rented a government quarter allotted to Assistant Registrar of the Supreme Court Hari Shankar Khekhar.

Investigation into the incident made it clear that some phone calls reaching the victim’s family were originating from Dubai.
