RAIPUR - A woman was arrested in a central jail complex in Chhattisgarh after authorities found her talking over a mobile phone to her husband, who was in his cell at the time, officials said Thursday.
The prisoner Rohit Rajput, behind bars for the past 10 months on charges of theft, was in barrack six of the Raipur central jail that has mobile-phone jammer equipment worth Rs.6 crore.
On Tuesday, however, he called his wife Anita Rajput from inside his barrack and was in a lengthy discussion when he was spotted by officials.
“We probed the issue urgently — how a prisoner had a mobile phone inside the barrack and who he was talking to. After a probe we found that he had been regularly calling his wife Anita Rajput. We arrested her Tuesday on basis of the call descriptions of her husband,” jail superintendent K.K. Gupta told IANS.
He said Anita was also in the jail complex when she was talking to her husband. Investigations had revealed that she had passed on a mobile set with an active number to her husband a few weeks ago when he was taken to a local jail.
Jail authorities have shifted Rohit Rajput from his barrack and banned him from meeting family members for a month.
The incident has caused huge embarrassment to the jail department that had installed the expensive mobile-phone jammer.
“We have asked the company that has installed the jammer at a cost of Rs.6 Crore to explain why the system failed,” Gupta said.
