NEW DELHI - A court here Thursday dismissed a man’s plea to reverse a judicial order and asked him to pay Rs.25,000 to his estranged wife for causing her mental torture.

Additional Sessions Judge J.R. Aryan said the compensation amount fixed by the metropolitan magistrate did not appear to be “unreasonable and excessive”.

The judge said: “Compensation is to be assessed by taking into consideration the damages for the injury, including mental torture and emotional distress, caused by acts of domestic violence committed by the respondent.”

The court said the woman in question had suffered emotional distress due to acts of physical torture.
