Southern California wildfire burns near homes

PEDLEY, Calif. — Fire spread across about 40 acres of brushy hills Wednesday, forcing evacuation of part of a Southern California mobile home community.

Winds up to 15 mph pushed the fire, which erupted about 1:30 p.m. in the unincorporated Glen Avon area of northwestern Riverside County.

Sheriff’s deputies evacuated 32 of 126 homes in the Santiago Estates Mobile Home Park, the county Fire Department said. No injuries were reported.

The mobile home park sits at the foot of hills surrounded by development about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.

Southern California has had blustery and dry weather this week, but the winds Wednesday were southwesterly, not the sometimes fierce northeasterly Santa Anas that fan the region’s worst wildfires.

Wildland fires that erupted Monday near Banning and Moreno Valley were held to a couple of acres.
