GURDASPUR - Three pilgrims, including a woman, from Delhi were killed Monday when the bus they were travelling in overturned near this Punjab town while they were returning from Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The bus hit a tree at a sharp turn and overturned at the Gurdaspur by-pass. Eighteen other people were injured, four of them seriously.

“The victims were going to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple,” said police officer Parmod Kumar. Gurdaspur is around 250 km from Punjab’s capital Chandigarh.

Those killed were identified as Ranbir Singh, 35, Rajinder Parsad Maheshwari, 60, and Gayatri Devi, 50.

Rajinder and Gayatri were from Delhi whereas Ranbir originally belonged to Agra but was staying in Delhi for the last few years.

“We will hand over the bodies to their family members after the post-mortem examination,” stated Kumar.
