NEW DELHI - Three undergraduate students and a restaurant supervisor were arrested here for stealing debit cards, police said Monday.
Prabhakar Kumar and Chandan, both 22, Prashant Kumar Jha, 21, and Sanjay Kumar, 24, were arrested after police investigated a complaint May 6 by Sachil Dagur that his debit card was stolen and misused.
The arrests came after it was found that the card was used for filling petrol, the police said, adding that information regarding ownership and movements of the car led to the arrest May 8.
While Prabhakar is pursuing B.Com from the School of Open Learning of Delhi University, Chandan is in third year of Bachelor of Business Administration course from Chandra Prabhu Jain Institute of Management in Patparganj. Prashant is also a B.Com student while Sanjay works as a supervisor at a restaurant in New Friends Colony.
According to police, Sanjay allegedly stole ATM cards belonging to the patrons of the restaurant where he worked and then made purchases at different stores.
Also, Chandan allegedly often watched customers at the ATM booths and managed to ascertain the PIN Code number from the movement of the fingers of the person operating the card, they said.
“Very often, the customer would drop the transaction slip in the dustbin which was collected by Chandan and he got to know the account number. With the help of account number and PIN Code, he would purchase railway tickets and mobile recharge coupons through the internet,” a senior police officer said.
