Johnson helps Earthquakes beat Red Bulls 4-0
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Ryan Johnson scored his first goal of the season and added two assists to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 4-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
Joey Gjertsen, Chris Wondolowski and defender Bobby Burling also scored for San Jose (4-2-0), which set a season high for goals scored during its most lopsided win of the season.
New York (5-2-0) played a man down most of the game after defender Luke Sassano was ejected for a rough tackle on Bobby Convey during the 14th minute.
Johnson began the scoring in the 44th minute when he slipped behind New York defenders to take a corner pass from Convey on the left side, then beat goalie Bouna Coundoul by pushing a left-footed kick into the far corner of the net. Convey finished with three assists.
After the halftime break, Johnson set up Gjertsen inside the penalty box during the 55th minute. Gjertsen juked defender Tim Ream to find an open look at the net, then fired a shot past Coundoul into the right corner.
Wondolowski, San Jose’s leading scorer, set a franchise record by scoring a goal for the fourth consecutive game in the 77th minute.
Burling completed the scoring in the 87th minute, taking a corner pass in front of the goal and punching it into the net with the top of his head.
San Jose goalie Joe Cannon had two saves to record his third shutout of the season. The Earthquakes finished with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
