Bail jumping convict arrested after 10 years

NEW DELHI - A murder convict on the run for ten years after he jumped bail was arrested in Mumbai Sunday, police said Tuesday.
Kulwant Rana, 39, resident of Tilak Nagar in west Delhi, was convicted in 1994 for killing Rani, 17, in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He appealed against his conviction in the Delhi High Court, which granted him bail in 2000.
Though his appeal was dismissed, Rana did not surrender and absconded.
“He violated his bail and went underground for 10 years,” a police officer said, adding that his hideouts were raided but all efforts made from time to time to trace him failed.
On April 12, a non-bailable warrant was issued against Rana and a police team set up to trace him.
“We conducted raids and all the relatives and old friends of Rana were interrogated. Our team received information that Rana could be in Mumbai,” the police officer said.
A police team, dispatched to Mumbai April 24, succeeded in arresting him after getting more information about his present whereabouts.
