Robbers shoot at cop, one held in east Delhi

NEW DELHI - A bike-borne robber was arrested Sunday after he and his accomplice shot and injured a policeman near Geeta colony in east Delhi, police said.

Saleem, 32, was arrested and his motorcycle was seized. His accomplice managed to flee. The two had snatched a hand bag from a couple when challenged by a policeman, whom they shot at and injured, police said.

“Head Constable Azad Veer of northeast district police was shot at by the criminals when they were trying to escape, he sustained five bullet injuries to both his right and left leg,” a police officer said.

The two bike-borne criminals were escaping after snatching the bag when challenged by Head Constable Veer, 48, who was on a patrol.

“Saleem was caught by two constables who had reached the spot. The robbers’ bike has been seized, while efforts are on to trace the second robber,” the officer added.

Police said the recovered motorcycle was stolen from Bhajanpura area of east Delhi.
