Gang selling cattle meat in Delhi busted

NEW DELHI - Three people have been arrested for selling, transporting and slaughtering of cattle in south Delhi, police said Sunday.
Idrish Ahmed, 36, Shahnawaz, 20, and Zahid Ahmed, 19, residents of Bijnour district, Uttar Pradesh were apprehended while they were transporting cattle meat in a pick-up truck April 28.
“We apprehended three people April 28 while they were transporting cattle meat from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi,” a police officer investigating the case told IANS.
According to police, several incidents of illegal cattle slaughter, transportation and selling of cattle meat were reported in various parts of Delhi.
“An Anti Auto Theft (AAT) squad of south district was formed to investigate the incidents of cattle meat being sold in Delhi. A secret information was received that cattle meat was being transported early morning April 28,” the officer added.
“We will carry out detailed investigations into the matter and submit a report,” he added.
Sources say that most the cattle meat was sent from Bijnour district where “police have identified a few villages which indulge in these type of activities”.
During interrogation the three arrested revealed that “they regularly supplied cattle meat to the walled city of Delhi, Meerut, and other cities in Uttar Pradesh”, the police officer said.
Police have recovered one tonne and 76 kg of cattle meat and seized a pick-up truck.
Cattle slaughter is banned in Delhi under the Delhi Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1994, with a jail term of five years without bail.
