Pa. housing authority fire kills 1, hurts several
WAYNESBURG, Pa. — A fire at a southwestern Pennsylvania apartment complex for elderly and disabled people has killed one person and hurt several others.
Greene County coroner Gregory Rohanna says 61-year-old Patricia Eddy was pronounced dead at the scene in Waynesburg, a small town about 50 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.
Officials say Eddy lived in the Avalon Court apartments unit where the fire began Thursday morning. The complex is run by the county Housing Authority.
The three-story building has about 40 units. Waynesburg fire Chief Jeff Marshall says about a dozen residents had to be rescued.
A burn victim has been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. Several other residents have been treated for smoke inhalation and other problems.
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
