NEW DELHI - The Supreme Court Monday dismissed an appeal by Manu Sharma, Congress leader Venod Sharma’s son, challenging his conviction and life sentence for killing ramp model Jessica Lall in April 1999.

A bench of Justices P. Sathasivam and Swatanter Kumar upheld the Delhi High Court judgement, which convicted Sharma, who is serving life sentence in Tihar jail.

The bench had reserved its verdict on Feb 18 after hearing arguments from both sides. Former union law minister Ram Jethmalani was among those who appeared for Sharma, while Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam appeared for the Delhi Police.

Manu Sharma challenged his conviction and life sentence awarded by the Delhi High Court in December 2006.

Visiting the restaurant of socialite Bina Ramani with some of his friends, Sharma had opened fire on Lall following a tiff over his demand for a drink, when the restaurant was to close for the day.
