MADRID - A prominent Italian lawyer, who represented the then Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, has been arrested in Spain, the daily El Mundo reported Tuesday on its website.

Giovanni Di Stefano, 55, was held Monday at a luxury villa in Palma de Majorca on embezzlement charges issued by a British court.

He is now being kept in isolation at a local hospital because of a health problem, the daily quoted police sources as saying.

Di Stefano is known for having represented notorious defendants including Saddam, who was executed in 2006.
