WASHINGTON - A nephew of the Dalai Lama died in northeast Florida Monday evening after he was hit by a car while walking along a highway, according to US media reports.

Jigme Norbu, 45, was struck and killed by a sports-utility vehicle while walking along the highway in Flagler county, CNN said citing the Florida Highway Patrol.

Norbu was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 7.30 p.m., the highway patrol said.

Norbu was taking part in a “Walk for Tibet” from St. Augustine to West Palm Beach to promote several international causes, according to the Ambassadors for World Peace website.

“Yes, it is true unfortunately,” Tempa Tshering, a representative of the Dalai Lama in New Delhi, confirmed to CNN.
