Minor sets herself afire after being raped

FIROZABAD - A minor girl student in this Uttar Pradesh town set herself on fire allegedly after she was raped by two of her schoolmates, police said Thursday. She is being treated for multiple burn injuries in a hospital.
The Class 5 girl of a local school was raped by two teenagers Wednesday in Nagla area while she was returning to her home after attending the Republic Day function at the school.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that on returning home, the girl did not inform anyone about the incident and later in the night set herself afire,” Superintendent of Police Udai Pratap told reporters in Firozabad, some 350 km from Lucknow.
“The matter came to my knowledge today (Thursday) when some local journalists informed me about the incident. I have constituted an enquiry committee, comprising police and district administration officials, into the matter,” he added.
The victim, aged about 13 years, who cannot be named under law, has received around 60 percent burns.
“She is being treated at the district hospital and her condition is stated to be stable,” said a police official.
The two teenagers, who are accused of raping the girl, are on the run, police said.
