Sharjah, Jan 27 (IANS/WAM) Police in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have foiled an attempt by an international gang to smuggle a huge consignment of hashish into the country.

Sharjah police, in a joint operation carried out with Fujairah police and the border security forces, seized 2.5 tonnes of hashish near Khor Fakkan town on the east coast.

This is the largest quantity of contraband ever attempted to be smuggled into the country in the last 20 years.

In the operation, a vessel carrying the consignment was confiscated, and a trader and 13 crew members, including 12 Iranians and a Pakistani, were arrested.
