PATNA - A first-year medical student hanged himself at his private lodge here after allegedly being harassed by seniors, his family said Thursday. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a probe.

“I have ordered Patna’s district magistrate and senior superintendent of police to conduct a probe into the case,” Nitish Kumar said.

Sunny Kumar, a student of Bihar’s Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), committed suicide late Wednesday after being ragged by seniors.

Sunny, in his early 20s, was a resident of Chapra district, and was staying at a private lodge in Mahendru locality near the college campus.

In a complaint lodged with the police, Sunny’s father said that ragging had claimed his son’s life, an official said.

A police officer at Sultanganj told IANS that Sunny’s body was found hanging from the ceiling of his room.

“At present, we are not in a position to say what prompted him to end his life. The matter is being probed,” the police officer said.

Sunny’s relatives said he was suffering from depression after being ragged on the campus.

However, PMCH authorities denied the allegation.

Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police Bacchu Singh Meena also ruled out ragging as the reason behind Sunny’s suicide.
