KUNMING - A suspected toxic gas leak near a detention facility in southwest China caused the poisoning of nine inmates Monday night, local officials and witnesses said Tuesday.

Inmates of the Xishan Detention Centre in suburban Kunming city of China’s Yunnan province said they smelt a pungent gas Monday night, Xinhua reported quoting a district government spokesman.

Some inmates suffered headaches and nausea, and some had difficulty breathing. Nine poisoned inmates — three males and six females — were taken to hospital for treatment.

The pungent gas had dispersed by late Monday night.

Work safety officials are checking factories located near the detention for gas leaks.
