SONBHADRA - At least three policemen were injured here after a mob, protesting the death of a local youth, turned violent and fought pitched battles with the police, officials said Tuesday.

The incident took place late Monday in Kon town of Sonbhadra district, where the locals were protesting the death of a 30-year-old man Ajai Kumar, whose body was recovered Sunday from Rorwan village in Kon.

According to locals, Kumar’s body was found a few metres away from the house of his in-laws, whom he had gone to meet a few days ago.

Refusing to hand over the body to the police, the protesters alleged that Kumar was murdered by his in-laws and that a case should be registered against them.

The protestors turned violent Monday night, threw bricks and even tried to set police vehicles on fire after a police team that went to pacify them claimed that Kumar died in an accident.

“The mob surrounded the police party and attacked them. The situation was brought under control only after additional force from other police stations reached the spot to rescue them,” Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar told reporters Tuesday in Sonbhadra, some 350 km from Lucknow.

“Additional security, including Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), has been deployed in the town. The situation is now under control,” he added.
