NEW DELHI - An attempted car-snatching by three youths in west Delhi was foiled by alert beat constables who rushed to the spot and overpowered the criminals, police said Monday.
The three - identified as Sunny, 23, Rahul, 23 and Deepak, 22 - stopped Sorav, a mobile shop owner, at a red light near Pankha Road flyover in Mayapuri area Sunday morning and threatened him with a knife.
“They were asking for the keys of the car from Sorav at knife point, but he raised an alarm. Two beat constables posted there rushed to help and nabbed the three,” said a senior police officer.
Commending the alert beat constables, the officer stressed it was beat policing that could change the crime graph of the city. He also noted that Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta’s scheme for monthly appraisal of beat constables is on.
Earlier this month, the Delhi Police chief promised to assess beat constables’ performance every month and said that non-performers will have to make way for others.
“To tackle street crimes in the city, beat police have to be on alert and it is they who have to nab criminals in the city,” Gupta said.
