NEW DELHI - The Delhi Police Saturday claimed to have busted a cricket betting racket with the arrest of six people from north Delhi. A laptop, mobile phones and Rs.72,000 in cash were also recovered.

Rajeev Sharma, Dharambir Singh, Suraj, Anil Kumar, Vishal Dua and Gagan Arora were arrested in Sector-16 area of Rohini Friday night.

Rajiv and his five associates were running a betting racket on the one-day international cricket matches being played between India and South Africa.

A decoy customer was sent to negotiate a deal with Rajeev Sharma. Sharma told the decoy that if anyone put Rs.1,000 on South Africa and it won, then he will get double the amount, Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma said.

The police also recovered Rs.72,000, a laptop, some mobile phones and television sets.

“During interrogation, they confessed that they were running satta (gambling) and were booking the stakes through mobile phones,” said Sharma.

They also revealed that they were using the website for obtaining the betting rates.
