GHAZIABAD - A first-year engineering student shot himself with an illegally acquired pistol after failing to do well in studies in Uttar Pradesh’s Muradnagar town, police said Saturday.

Police said Hitesh Kumar Sharma, son of Raj Kumar Sharma, was pursuing B.Tech at Krishna Institute of Engineering Technology (KIET) in Muradnagar.

Shortly after midnight Friday, the student came out of his rented room in Radhey Shyam Colony and fired from a locally-made illicit pistol at his head. Local residents who gathered on hearing the gunshot rushed him to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Hitesh was a resident of Aligarh. A suicide note found in his pocket mentioned that he was committing suicide for not being able to perform well in his studies.

Addressing the note to his father, he wrote that he was finding it difficult to fulfil his desires, so he had decided to end his life.

“His body was sent for autopsy, parents were informed and were expected to reach today,” said Superintendent of Police (Rural) M.M. Baig.
