LUCKNOW - A local leader of the Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of state capital Monday, police said.

Seetaram Gupta, 35, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne attackers in a market in the Mall area.

“We are yet to trace the assailants and establish the motive behind the crime,” superintendent of police (Rural) Ashok Prasad told reporters.

“He (Gupta) was in a market place when the two men sprayed him with bullets and managed to escape. Gupta died on the spot,” Prasad added.

According to police, Gupta was a block-level president of a ‘Bhaichara Samiti’ (Goodwill Committee) of the BSP in Lucknow.
