MUMBAI - Toughening its stand, the state government Friday slapped show-cause notices on 15 bureaucrats, mostly indian Administrative Service officers, who are members of the scam-hit Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society, official sources said.

The notices have already been served on 11 civil servants, and the remaining four will be served these soon, the official told IANS.

Sent by Chief Secretary J.P. Dange, the bureaucrats have been given a weeks time to submit their replies to the government.

Among other things, the bureaucrats have been asked about the circumstances under which they became members of Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society and the source of funds for the luxurious flats in the 31-storeyed building, the official said.

The Adarsh housing scam, since it broke out two months ago, had claimed the job of former chief minister Ashok Chavan.
