KOLKATA - A fraudster who tricked Jet Airways into paying twice for cancelled tickets, thus managing to garner Rs.2.09 crore in the past year, was arrested Wednesday, police said.
Mukesh Kishanpuria, 40, came under the scanner after an audit by the airline revealed something was amiss.
“His modus operandi was unique,” an officer of Kolkata police’s cyber crime wing said.
Kishanpuria would purchase tickets online, and then proceed to cancel them. At the same time, one of his aides would go to the airline counter with the hard copy of the ticket with the same objective.
The aide would call him as soon as money was refunded at the counter. Kishanpuria would then click the final cancel button on the site, thus managing to receive a double refund against a single cancelled ticket.
The main server of the computer takes less than a minute to register a cancellation, police said. The fraud was conducted during these precious few seconds.
“Many credit cards too have been recovered from him. We are now on the lookout for his aides,” joint commissioner, crime, Damayanti Sen said.
