MOHALI - Search operations are on to nab three young men who looted Rs.35 lakh from an elderly woman after holding her hostage at her house, police said Wednesday.

According to the police, Jastej Singh, a non-resident Indian, had sold a piece of land for over Rs.35 lakh, and kept the cash at his relative’s home here.

“Jastej was staying at house number 1210 in phase IX here for the last few days. Yesterday, he went to Ludhiana to sell a piece of land, and returned with over Rs.35 lakh. At around 9 p.m., he went out for dinner with other members of the family leaving behind an old lady at home,” G.S. Bhullar, senior superintendent of police, Mohali, told IANS.

The three youth then entered the house Tuesday night, locked the 65-year-old woman, and escaped with the cash.

It is most likely an inside job, police said.
