Kingpin of Himachal’s fake certificate racket arrested

SHIMLA - The kingpin behind the fake university certificate racket and his accomplice were arrested here Thursday, police said.
Gurvinder Singh and his accomplice Nagesh were accused of issuing fake certificates of Himachal Pradesh University, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Barjesh Sood told IANS.
“Three fake certificates were recovered from Gurvinder’s possession. During interrogation he confessed that he sold more than 40 fake certificates of various graduate and postgraduate courses to the students,” he added.
Gurvinder was arrested in 1997 under similar charges and a trial against him is still pending, Sood added.
The racket came to light Oct 15 when Himachal Pradesh University found that a BA-II pass certificate of a girl student was fake.
Subsequently, the university asked police to investigate the matter.
The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education is also in news these days as police have found that more than 208 students in schools across the state cleared their exams without even appearing for them.
The students of Classes 8, 10, 11 and 12 secured first class without ever appearing for the tests.
The scam came to light last month when a Class 10 student claimed he got a pass certificate without appearing in the board examinations.
