NEW DELHI - Fire engines will be stationed in crowded markets of Delhi and other vulnerable areas to tackle any fire accident on Diwali that records at least 200 fire cases each year, a top official said Wednesday.
“The Delhi Fire Service is gearing up for Diwali by chalking out plans like installing extra fire engines in markets and in south Delhi areas like Malyviya Nagar, South Extension where fire stations are not nearby,” Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Chief Fire Officer R.C. Sharma told IANS.
“The shopkeepers should install fire extinguishers in their stalls, at least they should have sand buckets for their safety,” Sharma said.
Every firecracker shop in Delhi should get licence from the Delhi Police after meeting the safety requirement.
We don’t have any restriction on the number of licences as long as the shops meet the safety requirement. Last year, about 1,000 cracker shops were given licence by the Delhi Police,” a police official told IANS.
According to a fire department official, 267 incidents of fire were reported on Diwali in Delhi while 270 in 2008 and 150 in 2007.
“On an average, at least 200 cases are recorded,” Sharma told IANS.
Fire officer Manoj Sharma said: We have no celebrations ourselves as we are busy providing safety to Delhi on Diwali.
