PANIPAT - Almost a month after the complaint was made, a man was finally booked for repeatedly raping his 25-year-old daughter-in-law in this Haryana town, police said Wednesday.
The case was registered following the intervention of NGO All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch (AIDMAM). In the complaint, the victim had alleged that her father-in-law Rajvir Singh had repeatedly raped her while her husband was away on a government job in Himachal Pradesh.
We have registered a case against Rajvir Singh. We have also raided the village but the accused is absconding. However, our efforts are on to arrest him, said Deepak Kumar, investigation officer of the case.
Meanwhile, AIDMAM accused the police of working under the influence of the accused.
The man’s family is pressurising the victim for a panchayat settlement. First complaint was filed Sep 21 and second Oct 10. They (police) are not cooperating with us and are helping the accused, said Savita, state coordinator of AIDMAM.
Rajvir was attending a panchayat to save himself Monday. We informed the police about this but they did not show any interest in arresting him, she added.
The victim alleged that Rajvir raped her several times in August this year. She had to run away from the house Aug 13 to save herself from further exploitation.
