NEW DELHI - With the national capital getting its own Excise Act, Delhi’s Excise Minister A.K. Walia has asked his department to be more vigilant and act swiftly on receiving information about illicit liquor, an official said Friday.

Under the new law, Delhi has increased the jail term and also slapped fine to the tune of Rs.1 lakh for illegally importing liquor or not paying duty on foreign liquor.

Drinking in public would attract Rs.5,000 fine, and drinking and creating a nuisance would invite a Rs.10,000 fine and a jail term — these are among provisions of Delhi government’s new excise law that came into effect Monday night.

The Delhi Excise Act, 2009, has replaced the outdated Punjab Excise Act, 1914, which was extended to the national capital.
