KOLKATA - Five people were killed Tuesday when the bus they were travelling in overturned in West Bengal’s Burdwan district, police said.

The driver lost control over the privately-owned bus near Charul village in Debpur in Bhatar block, about 130 km from here, and it fell in a ditch around 8 a.m.

“Three people were killed on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries on their way to a local hospital,” a police officer said.

Several people were injured and the condition of six is stated to be critical. They have been shifted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

Local people rushed to the spot and rescued passengers, the police officer said.

“We have spoken to the hospital superintendent and requested him to arrange blood and emergency health facilities to treat the critical patients,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator from Bhatar block Sayed Mohd Masiha said.
