JAKARTA - At least 35 people were killed and 13 others injured Saturday when two passenger trains collided in Indonesia’s Central Java province, hospital staff said.

The Argo Anggrek train was going from Jakarta to the East Java capital of Surabaya when it ploughed into the stationary Senja Utama before dawn in Pemalang district.

“All the bodies have been brought here but some of the injured were being treated in another hospital,” said Tita Indriyani, an official at Hasyim Ashari Hospital in Pemalang.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said some passengers were still trapped in the wreckage.

Television footage showed residents using bamboo poles to remove bodies and trapped passengers from the wreckage.

In another accident Saturday, one person was killed and four others injured when one train crashed into another in the Central Java city of Solo, the Antara news agency reported.

Ervan said officials from the National Transportation Safety Commission have been dispatched to the accident site in Pemalang district to investigate the crash.

“We want to know why the Senja Utama stopped,” he said.

The drivers of the trains survived the accident and were being questioned by police, local media said.
