NEW DELHI - A man allegedly attempting to extort Rs.60 lakh from the family of his “girlfriend” was arrested Saturday, police here said.

The accused, identified as Prabhjot Singh, was pursuing a bachelor degree in computer applications (BCA) here and wanted to go to London.

“On Sep 24, S. Malkiyat Singh registered a complaint with the police that his 18-year-old daughter has not returned home. A few hours later, he received an sms on his mobile phone demanding Rs.60 lakh for his daughter’s release,” said a senior police official.

Police gathered intelligence and came to know about Prabhjot who had also gone missing around the same time.

“We got information that Prabhjot, along with the girl, will reach the Moti Nagar Metro Station. We laid a trap and arrested the accused,” the police official told IANS.

Police said the girl has been rescued as she had no idea of Prabhjot’s plan.

During interrogation, Prabhjot revealed that he planned the whole episode to go abroad.
