WARSAW - The site of the plane crash that killed Poland’s president and scores of senior personnel may still contain the remains of victims, the head of Poland’s military prosecution said Thursday.
Military prosecutor Krzysztof Parulski said he was “deeply convinced” that human remains may still be found in the forest at Smolensk, Russia, where a plane crash April 10 killed President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others.
“It hurts us that human remains are still found there,” Parulski said.
Parulski added that the wreckage of the plane, which is laid out near Smolensk airport, was still not gated off or secured.
Prosecutors said Thursday that a Polish man had claimed to find remains - likely human - at the site near the airport during his trip there earlier this month. Prosecutors are currently questioning the man.
Parulski added that he hoped a team of Polish archaeologists and geophysicists would soon be able to gather debris and remains from the plane crash site.
Poland and Russia are currently cooperating on separate investigations into the plane crash that killed Kaczynski and dozens of parliamentarians and military officers en route to ceremonies in Russia.
