Mexico City, Sep 22 (IANS/EFE) Five dismembered bodies were found on a highway near Tanhuato, a city in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, police said.

The trunks of the bodies were piled up on the road that leads to the Villanueva ranch and the heads and other body parts were packed in trash bags, a police spokesman told EFE.

The bodies of the unidentified victims, who appeared to be in their 30s and 40s, were found Monday.

“The bodies were naked and did not belong to residents of this town,” the police spokesman said.

The victims, who were from the neighbouring state of Jalisco, were killed at another location and dumped in Tanhuato, Mexican media reported.

Officials, however, did not confirm the reports.

A number of gangland killings have occurred in recent weeks in the Michoacan-Jalisco border region, the press reported.

Mexico has been plagued in recent years by drug-related violence blamed on powerful cartels.
