SHIMLA - The grandson of a former Canadian prime minister and his Indian colleague were rescued from Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district after their vehicle was stranded on a road following massive landslides, police said Tuesday.

“Maximillian Xavier and his Indian colleague, who were stranded near Khwangi ‘nullah’ (rivulet) due to massive landslides on the road, were rescued late Monday,” Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar told IANS over telephone.

He said their vehicle was still stranded there and they were provided a hotel in Kalpa town, the district headquarters town located some 250 km from here.

They were on way to Pooh village for trekking.

“Both of them were safe and waiting for the roads to reopen,” he added.

Another police official said the Canadian embassy in Delhi was informed and they had confirmed that Xavier is the grandson of a former Canadian prime minister.
