Car catches fire near Jama Masjid attack site

NEW DELHI - A Maruti 800 car caught fire due to a short-circuit near the Jama Masjid, outside which two foreigners were injured in firing by motorcycle-borne gunmen Sunday, police said.

The accident happened in front of the Jama Masjid police station, where the car, belonging to a local resident, was in a parking lot, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, the flames engulfed the car and there was a blast which caused momentary panic. The tense situation was further aggravated by the presence of a pressure cooker inside the vehicle was suspected to be a bomb.

The locals doused the flames with the assistance of two fire tenders from the Delhi Fire Service.

According to the police, the scorched vehicle was seized but on inspection, nothing suspicious was found.

No one was injured in the accident, police said, adding there was no link between the two incidents.
