COLOMBO - At least 60 policemen and two Chinese nationals were killed Friday in a massive blast in containers filled with explosives at a police station in eastern Sri Lanka, the Daily News reported quoting a military official.

The toll in the blast at the Karadiyanaru police station, some 260 km from Colombo, has risen to 62, including 60 policemen and two Chinese nationals, military spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala said.

The containers belonged to a Chinese company that is undertaking construction work in the east.

Three containers, loaded with explosives meant to be used to blast a rock for the construction work, were kept at the Karadiyanaru police station for safety, the Spokesman said.

The two Chinese officials unloaded the explosives according to their requirement. One container exploded while the explosives were being shifted, triggering blasts in other containers.

The injured have been admitted to the Batticaloa hospital.
