MP claims attack, police in doubt

NEW DELHI - Even as Congress MP and former chief minister of Orissa Hemananda Biswal claimed he was attacked by his former employee at his residence Thursday morning, police officials say the facts presented by him don’t appear to be correct.

Biswal claimed that he was attacked by his former employee Prabhat Kumar Sharma alias Swamy in the bathroom of his 7, Kamraj lane residence.

According to Biswal, Sharma had been employed in good faith but turned out to be a swindler. Hence, his services were terminated.

The MP doubted vengeance to be the motive behind the attack.

“He held the gun on my temple and pressed the trigger but it did not work. Before he could try the other gun, I ran out of the bathroom,” Biswal said.

However, police officers say that Biswal’s testimony is not supported by facts.

“The evidence that Biswal provides in his account does not corroborate with the state of events at 7, Kamraj Lane early (Thursday) morning,” a police officer told IANS.

“There were two security personnel on guard at that time. There is no evidence of forced entry, neither are there any signs of scuffle in the bathroom as Biswal has alleged,” he said.

“The small kitchen window from where Biswal alleged that Sharma entered the house, may be too small for a man like Sharma to pass through,” he added.

The officer also said that none of the phone calls traced to the accused’s mobile phone were sourced to Delhi.

“Hemananda Biswal is yet to file a written formal complaint,” Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesperson, said.

Biswal was the chief minister of Orissa from December 1989 to March 1990 and December 1999 to March 2000.
