Village buried in mudslides in Italy

Salerno (Italy), Sep 11 (IANS/AKI) At least one person was feared killed and the picturesque village of Atrani on Italy’s Amalfi coast was buried by mudslides after torrential rain caused a river to burst its banks.

Rescue workers Friday used bulldozers to remove mud from the medieval period town’s tiny square but were unable to find Francesca Mansi, 25, who disappeared after the mud torrent swirled though the area.

“The cause of the mudslides was rain that was so incredibly intense that you couldn’t keep your umbrella open,” Atrani mayor, Nicola Carrano, was quoted as saying by Naples newspaper Il Mattino di Napoli.

The Amalfi coast which stretches along the Tyrrhenian sea near Naples attracts thousands of tourists every summer.
