CHANDIGARH - The high-security Nabha jail in Punjab’s Patiala district will install a mobile phone jamming system to block illegal usage of mobile phones by prison inmates.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Wednesday approved the Rs.16.1 million (Rs.1.61 crore)-project for the installation of mobile jamming system in the Nabha jail to ensure fool-proof security.
At a meeting of the senior officers of the Punjab police and prison department here Wednesday, Badal also approved the installation of biometric visitor management system at the Central Jail in Ludhiana on a pilot-project basis. The equipment will cost nearly Rs.2.7 million (Rs.27 lakh).
The same will be replicated in other prisons in the state, officials said here.
The chief minister was apprised about the installation of public call offices (PCOs) in all the central and district jails of the state, except Nabha and Sangrur jails, to curb the practice of misuse of mobile phones.
The PCO facility was introduced earlier this year by the Prisons Department for the inmates so that they could talk with their family members.
