Italy: Explosion near anti-Mafia magistrate’s home
ROME — A bombing in southern Italy has damaged the apartment house of a magistrate who investigates the ‘ndrangheta crime syndicate.
Authorities say the pre-dawn explosion Thursday in Reggio Calabria was apparently the latest act of intimidation by the ‘ndrangheta, a global cocaine trafficker. It shattered windows and the door, but magistrate Salvatore Di Landro and other occupants were unharmed.
In January a bombing damaged the entrance of Reggio’s courthouse. A few weeks later a bullet was mailed to another prosecutor fighting the ‘ndrangheta. The syndicate’s crime clans are based in Calabria, but investigators say it increasingly operates out of northern Italy, Germany, Spain, Colombia, Mexico and elsewhere.
Last month, 300 ‘ndrangheta suspects were arrested.
