CHANDIGARH - The Haryana Police plan to make National Highway No.1 (NH-1), popularly known as the Grand Trunk Road, a “crime-free” zone — including strict curbs on car-jackings and traffic-rule violations.
Haryana’s Director General of Police (DGP) Ranjiv Dalal said Saturday that the state police would also set up Rs.20 million Electronic Traffic Surveillance Tower at the Shahabad, Samana Bahu and Butana police stations situated on NH-1 to keep an eye on all light and heavy vehicles, and to curb violations of traffic rules.
“We plan to make NH-1 crime-free,” Dalal added.
In recent years, there have been several incidents of crime, especially looting and car-jackings, on the busy highway that connects the national capital with parts of Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
Dalal said that Haryana Police are being equipped with a Rs.450 million Crime Criminal Network System (CCNS) to computerize the working of all police stations.
“This will strengthen the law and order situation in the state. Besides other things, it will facilitate registration of first information reports (FIRs) through computers,” the DGP said.
He added that anti-child labour law would be strictly enforced on NH-1 to curb exploitation of children.
“Special checking would be done on dhabas (eateries) dotting the highway to ensure that children are not made to work there. The police would also conduct special drives to check drunken driving on the highway,” he said.
