NEW DELHI - The government is actively considering a proposal to amend the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or enact a separate law to tackle honour killings, Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said Wednesday.

However, there was no proposal to amend the Hindu Marriage Act, Maken said in a written reply to Bhalchandra Mungekar (nominated) in the Rajya Sabha.

Maken said his ministry had sent a detailed advisory in September 2009 to all the states and union territories asking them to “take appropriate measures to curb honour killings”.

The basic responsibility for prevention or punishment of honour killings was with the state governments, he added.
