CHANDIGARH - A frustrated Panjab University student, who had to repeat two papers of the annual examinations, threatened to commit suicide if her result is not declared in time. The varsity has ordered a probe.
Akashdeep Kaur, who is pursuing Bachelors of Arts (BA) from Government College in Sector 46 here, was declared failed in her first year examination in 2009. However, after the re-evaluation her failed status was converted to compartment in Public Administration.
“She passed the compartment examination of Public Administration but when she went to collect her score card, the university officials informed her that she had compartment in Political Science instead of Public Administration,” an employee of Panjab University’s administration block told IANS requesting anonymity.
“Later, she also gave the compartment examination of Political Science but is still waiting for the results,” the official said.
Akashdeep reached the terrace of the administration block Thursday and threatened to jump from there.
“I am coming to the examination branch of the university for the last 10 days to get my results. But nobody is listening to me. Under such circumstances, I am left with no option other than to commit suicide,” she said.
However, she was convinced by varsity officials to come down, assuring her of immediate help. The authorities have marked an inquiry into the matter.
“Such incidents are intolerable in the university. We will make sure that strict action is taken against the errant officials. We have ordered an inquiry to find out the people responsible for this harassment,” Panjab University’s Dean Students’ Welfare Naval Kishore said.
