Cases of Scheduled Caste women’s rape rose 2004-08

NEW DELHI - The number of registered cases of rape of women belonging to the Scheduled Castes has gone up from 2004 to 2008, the Rajya Sabha was informed Thursday.

In a written reply to Om Prakash Mathur (Bharatiya Janata Party), Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napoleon said the data for 2009 was not available. For 2010, the data would be available at the end of the year.

“As per the data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and the home ministry, the number of registered cases of rape of women belonging to the Scheduled Castes during 2004 was 1,157, 2005 - 1,172, 2006 - 1,217, 2007 - 1,349 and in 2008 it was 1,457.”

He also said as per the 2001 census, the percentage of SC population to total population in the country was 16.2 percent. Data on percentage of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) was not available in 2001 census.

In the state-wise data related to 2008, Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of 375 rapes of SC women. Madhya Pradesh recorded 357 case, Rajasthan 153 and Andhra Pradesh ed 88.

In 2008, no case was registered in West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram , Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir.
