NEW DELHI - The government will soon finalise an action plan to improve road safety, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways R.P.N. Singh said here Wednesday.

The plan envisages steps to improve data collection and evaluation, reviewing standards and guidelines for highways and urban roads, vehicle safety standards, he said at an event organised by CII.

He said the plan would also review the driving license system and initiate capacity building programmes such as establishment of centres of excellence for research on road safety.

He said the ministry was in the process of finalising the plan in consultation with all stakeholders. The plan recognises the need for a coherent, multi-sectoral and integrated approach.

On the National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board Bill 2010, Singh said the ministry was examining the recommendations made by the parliamentary standing committee and would attempt to make the Bill more comprehensive with the help of state governments.
