Meerut police arrest robbers, expose Ghaziabad’s claim

MEERUT - The Meerut police Friday exposed a claim of the Ghaziabad police to have solved a robbery case in which Rs.23 lakh were looted from a cashier of an oil trading company in January this year.

Meerut Deputy Inspector General Jai Narayan Singh said four men were arrested by the Meerut police Thursday. They confessed to have committed 16 robberies, including the loot of Rs.23 lakh.

“During sustained interrogation, the men confessed that they robbed Rs.23 lakh from cashier Sunil of Shivam Traders, an oil merchant company of Hapur sub-division town of Ghaziabad,” said Umesh Roria, the station officer of Nauchandi police station, Meerut.

According to him, Sunil was carrying Rs.23 lakh in his bag Jan 4 and company driver Shri Ram was taking the cashier on a scooter to Indus Ind Bank when two men on a motorcycle forced them to halt their scooter at gun point. Swiftly, they snatched the bag and disappeared.

The Ghaziabad police had earlier arrested three men and recovered Rs.5,500 from them, claiming to having solved the robbery case.

A Meerut police officer said the Ghaziabad police claim was fake and it has been exposed. Meerut Inspector General Chander Prakash has ordered an enquiry into the fake claims of Ghaziabad police.

After the expose, the team which arrested the four robbers was rewarded Rs.100,000.
